Nintendo’s latest major console release - which sadly doesn’t look like a giant switch with Nintendo’s logo on it - is nearly a year old now. Since that time, it has gone on to do pretty well for itself with 10 million units sold within 2017, especially compared to the Wii U’s 13.5 million unit figure that took about half a decade to achieve.

If you’d been holding off buying the Nintendo Switch so far, here’s what you need to know about it as of 2018.

Prices and promotions

Price is always one of the most important factors to take into consideration when making a purchase. Back in the pre-purchasing days, the Switch was sold in Malaysia for over RM2000, which was a bit of an off-putting figure despite the bundle package. Here is how the numbers look like now, based on four local game retailers and including their respective promotions.

Gamer’s Hideout

Following the end of its New Year Switch sale a week ago at the time of writing, Gamer’s Hideout is currently offering the Neon and Grey versions of the console at RM1,699 with a 1-year warranty. That’s RM200 less from the original RM1,899 price, but is cash and carry only. As for the Red version, it’s only available as part of a RM2,199 Mario bundle, which is currently out of stock.

Compared to the previous sale, the current prices are RM200 higher and lack the bonus of getting an extra RM20 discount on any Switch game.

Heavy Arm

When asked how long their current Switch bundle sale would last, the reply was that it was on a “batch by batch” basis with the package usually changing in 2 to 3 weeks. Currently, Heavy Arm’s online store lists three Maxsoft Bundles, one for each colour variant and each with a price of RM2,149 (the original price is RM2,199). The offerings are largely the same, with the main difference being that the Red bundle comes with Lego Worlds instead of Fire Emblem Warriors as the fixed included game choice.

Below are the bundles and their respective details:

Nintendo Switch Red Joy-Con Maxsoft Bundle

- Premium tempered glass screen protector + free installation

- Third Party Pouch

- Choose 1 game of your choice (if not interested in Super Mario Odyssey)

- Switch Lego Worlds (fixed game)

- RM100 Cash Voucher (For Walk-In)

- 12 months warranty from Maxsoft Distribution

Nintendo Switch Neon/Grey Joy-Con Maxsoft Bundle

- Premium tempered glass screen protector + free installation

- Third Party Pouch

- Choose 1 game of your choice (any standard edition game)

- Switch Fire Emblem Warriors (fixed game)

- RM100 Cash Voucher (For Walk-In)

- 12 months warranty from Maxsoft Distribution

M4G

A more detailed rundown would require a walk-in visit to one of their stores, but M4G did share that they were having an RM1,459 cash-and-carry promotion - this is also the cheapest price on this list. A free screen protector and pouch are involved.

Impulse Gaming

Like Gamer’s Hideout, Impulse Gaming’s Red Mario Switch set (called the Nintendo Switch Asia Set Super Mario Odyssey Bundle) is currently out of stock, but you can have them email a notification when it’s available if you’re really interested in its contents, which includes the following at RM1,699:

- Nintendo Switch Console x 1

- Red Joycon (R) and (L) x 1

- Joycon Grip x 1

- Switch Super Mario Odyssey x 1

- RM100 Cash Vouchers for Retail Walk-In customers

The website also notes that the console is from Maxsoft Singapore, with a one-year warranty and RM100 charge to send it back. The Red Joycon comes with a three-month warranty.

The Neon and Grey bundles are still available however, and both come with the following at RM1,499:

- Nintendo Switch Console x 1

- Nintendo Switch Dock x 1

- Joycon (R) and (L) x 1 (Grey or Neon depending on bundle)

- Joycon Grip x 1RM100 Cash Voucher for Retail walk-in customers
