E3 2018: All Four Corners of Square Enix’s Press Con

By Jasmin on Jun 12, 2018

Possibly the shortest press conference thus far, Square Enix took 29 minutes to show us...nothing much. Not even anything on the Final Fantasy VII remake! Nevertheless, here’s what happened:

They announced a new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV Online called Stormblood and a crossover event with Monster Hunter: World. An official release date for the Western release of Dragon Quest XI: Echos of an Elusive Age has been set for September 4th.

Announced during Microsoft’s press conference, Nier:Automata is coming to the Xbox One with all the current DLCs. DONTNOD’s latest title to the Life is Strange universe gave us the very important detail that The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is not a sequel, but it is a part of the timeline.

A little bit more light has finally been shed on two awaited sequels to two beloved video game series:

SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER

A new gameplay featuring a lot more grit. This new installment to the revamped Tomb Raider series is even darker than before. “Becoming one with the jungle”, Lara must use her environments and her trusty bow to sneak around and take down Trinity, one goon at a time.

Releasing Sept 14, pre-order is available right now.

JUST CAUSE 4

Rico is back in a fictional South American country, Soliz, to cause more chaos and take down the malicious Black Hand. Just Cause 4 brings a more dynamic weather system and revamped wheels. Enemies of different archetypes are fitted with advanced AI to change the game up as you play. More details to come (perhaps at Sony’s con!)

A couple of new games were announced too, with little to no explanation as to what it could possibly be about:

BABYLON’S FALL

From the creator of Bayonetta, Platinum Games have teamed up with Square to create this brand new RPG. I have no idea what this is. All I know is that it is coming out on PS4 and Steam in sometime in 2019

THE QUIET MAN

Playing a deaf man with some wicked martial arts skills. This trailer also gave us near to no information though there will be more to come in August. As a student of sign language and deaf culture, I am quite intrigued...

Short and sweet, to the point, the Japanese way. Hopefully more details on Square’s new titles will be shed sooner rather than later, and I think its safe to say that Tomb Raider, Kingdom Hearts III and Just Cause 4 will share a bit of the spotlight at Sony’s press conference, 9AM later. Don’t know how anyone can sleep thinking that... Stay tuned as we unpack more press cons from E3 this week and keep an eye out on our Facebook for more video game goods!
