E3 2018: EA's Game Announcements

By Yue Lynn on Jun 10, 2018

Electronic Arts (EA) was the first video game company to kick things off at E3 with their much anticipated EA Play press conference. During the the conference, EA revealed more information on their upcoming games, ranging from big IPs such as Battlefield V and Anthem to their EA Sports titles (FIFA 19, Madden NFL 19 and NBA Live 19). Additionally, the company also put a spotlight on their EA Originals (indie) games, namely Sea of Solitude, in addition to a surprise launch announcement of Unravel Two, which is available now. On top of that, EA had also announced a new subscription service called Origin Access Premier for PC players.

The following were the exciting highlights from EA Play:

Battlefield V

The much-anticipated multiplayer mode for Battlefield V was finally revealed. In addition to that, the game will give players the ability to dive through windows to surprise enemies. There will also be tanks/vehicles capable of destroying buildings, which makes it difficult to hide from opponents.

The second reveal for this title was the battle royale mode. However, further details on it will only be provided later this year. On that note, players can breathe easy as it was confirmed that there will be no loot boxes and no premium passes for Battlefield V.

As for the title’s War Stories campaign, a teaser for 'Nordlys War Story' will be showed exclusively during the Microsoft Xbox conference tomorrow so be sure to keep your eyes peeled on it.

Battlefield V will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Brought to you by EA and BioWare, Anthem is a co-op (4-man) action RPG game that will be released on 22nd February 2019. Players will be playing as a Freelancer, with four types of available roles-slash-exosuits (called a Javelin) namely Ranger, Colossus, Storm and Interceptor. Each player can choose to pilot a Javelin of their choice and said suits are fully customisable. There will be no loot boxes for Anthem too.

Interestingly, Anthem was designed in a way where BioWare can add more stories to it in the years to come (think Mass Effect and Dragon Age).

Anthem will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

EA Sports

The release date for FIFA 19 is 28th September 2018 with the addition of the UEFA Champions League in the game. Also, starting from now for a limited time, FIFA 18 is free to be downloaded to play, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia update.

FIFA 18 is currently available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

FIFA 19 will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Madden NFL 19

NBA Live 19

EA did not mentioned much about the above two games aside from revealing the release dates for them: Madden NFL 19 (10th August 2018); NBA Live 19 (7th September 2018)

Madden NFL 19 will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

NBA Live 19 will be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Star Wars

For Star Wars’ session, two big things were teased. The first one was the fact that there will be a new Star Wars game coming from Respawn Entertainment called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, to be released during 2019’s holiday season. With a focus on Jedi, the game will be set in the dark times between Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope.

The second significant tease would be that Star Wars Battlefront II will feature an update in the future which focuses on the Clone Wars. This update will feature the largest level ever to be built for Battlefront and will feature characters like General Grievous, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Count Dooku.

Star Wars Battlefront II is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Command & Conquer: Rivals

EA announced a new Command & Conquer game in a form or a mobile game called Command & Conquered: Rivals. There’s no release date yet for this competitive strategy game but Android users can sign up for a Pre-Alpha version of the game starting from now.

Command & Conquered: Rivals will be available for: Android and iOS

EA Originals:

Unravel Two

This title by Swedish developer, Coldwood Interactive, which leaked earlier before the press conference was revealed to be finished and currently available for purchase now. Players can opt to play in either a single player mode or a co-op (two-player) mode. Focusing on “a spirit of optimism and togetherness”, this cute and charming platformer game involved players playing as beings made of yarn (Yarny) going on adventures.

Unravel Two is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Sea of Solitude

This fantasy game by Berlin-based studio, Jo-Mei Games, put emphasis on the theme of loneliness. The story revolved around a girl named Kay whose loneliness turned her into a monster and as the game progresses, players will discover more emotions while finding a way to turn Kay back into a human. This third-person exploration game was slated to be released in early 2019.

Sea of Solitude will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Origins Access Premier

This is a subscription service for PC that provide players with access to upcoming games (such as Battlefield V, Anthem, Madden NFL 19 and FIFA 19) at an earlier date. Additionally, subscribers will have access to The Vault which contained over 100 games for them to play. This service will be launched later this summer.
