After much anticipation,  the esports titles that will be included in the 2018 Asian Games that will be held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia August 18 to September 2, has been revealed.  The Asian Esports Federation (AESF) has confirmed the inclusion of six titles, namely League of Legends, Arena of Valor, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, Starcraft II, Clash Royale and Hearthstone in the regional sports tournament.

As reported by ESPN last year, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) had partnered up with Alisports, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, to bring esports to the Asian Games in which the OCA stated that the esports competitions will be held at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games as a demonstration sport. According to EsportsID, there will still be medal contention for said competitions but these medals will not be counted in the overall medal standings.

However fans need not be sullen as esports will become an official medalled sport in the 2022 Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou, China.

Not much official information regarding the selected titles’ competitions were revealed but according to Ligagame, each participating country’s qualifications can be held starting from 5th May until 31st May 2018, noting that the countries are free to choose any dates from said period to conduct the qualifications.

Interestingly enough, from the six selected games, two titles (Clash Royale and Arena of Valor) are mobile games while Hearthstone is the sole online card game. Across the board, gaming platforms like PC (League of Legends and Starcraft II), consoles (most probably will be used for PES 2018) and smartphones are comprehensively represented and diversity in genres looks to be present too. As reported by EsportsID, the official selection was done by the AESF under the approval of the OCA with recommendation by the Indonesia Asian Games 2018 Organizing Committee (INASGOC).

Additional information on 2018 Asian Games’ esports competitions shows that the games will be broken into two categories, Team and Individual Events. The games that will be included in Team Events are League of Legends , Arena of Valor and Pro Evolution Soccer 2018. While Individual Events will include StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, Clash Royale and Hearthstone.

All in all, any of you esports fan out there planning a trip to Indonesia to cheer for your national team in the 2018 Asian Games?
