The Grand Theft Auto franchise might be one of the most recognizable video game series, but it’s not short of controversy since the first entry was released 20 years ago. Conservative parents and lawmakers have long ridiculed the series for its explicit depiction of violence, sexual content, and the usage of drugs; and they might now have a more solid reason to continue the fight against Rockstar, after a bag of meth was found in a used copy of GTA V by a minor.
According to Kotaku, a Florida family purchased a used copy of the game at GameStop for their 11-year-old kid, and as he was going through the manual, he came across a plastic bag containing some white substance. The suspicious-looking object was then handed to his mom, Kayla McAllister and they made a police report, before confirming that it is indeed meth. Here’s McAllister’s account of the incident on her Facebook page, along with an excerpt of the report itself.
Today i took my son to gamestop in Tallahassee to trade in games and get some new ones. When he opened the booklet inside one of the pre owned games he ( MY ELEVEN YEAR OLD SON!!!!!!!) found this. A baggie of fucking meth! Clearly the game was not properly checked when it was traded in and because of the carelessness i could have lost a child. Thankfully He brought it right to us and said what is this?
The controlled substance was apparently left by the previous owner of the game, but it certainly raises alarms, considering what might happen to the kid if he does consume it. McAllister was also deeply concerned with the fact that her 3-year-old daughter might found it instead.
That's why I didn't sleep all last night. My three-year-old daughter tears [her son's] games apart. And had he not found it an [sic] she did this could have gone so differently. Because we would have never known it came from the game. She could have died, and I would have spent the rest of my life wondering where it even came from.
She even contacted the GameStop store that they bought the used GTA V from for an explanation, but a representative stated that they have checked everything, and they offered her a replacement. Enough is enough for McAllister as she vowed not to purchase anything from GameStop ever again.
