Travel into the world of Ixalan with Dinosaurs, Vampires, Pirates, and Merfolks in Magic: The Gathering

By Kurtis Chan on Sep 21, 2017

Magic fans listen up, it's time to brave the unknown as Wizards of the Coast is delighted to take you along on a journey to Ixalan, a brand new expansion in Magic: The Gathering.

Ixalan is a world of discovery, surrounded with lush jungles, gorgeous waterways, and no small amount of treasure. Much of that treasure, not to mention unimaginable power, lies within a lost city of gold called Orazca. In fact, this would be a lovely vacation spot if it weren't for the sun Empire, Brazen Coalition, River of Heralds, and Legion of Dusk constantly fighting to locate and control Orazca.

The Sun Empire (And Their Enraged Dinosaurs!)

The Warriors of the Sun Empire have learned to command terrifying Dinosaurs on the battlefield. Their signature mechanic is Enrage, which will trigger whenever the Dinosaurs are dealt damage. Angry dinos are never a good thing.

The Brazen Coalition (And Their Raiding Pirates!)

If you're a Pirate in the Brazen Coalition, you seek to amass treasure. It's what you do. If you want to save fifteen percent or more on the amount of effort it takes to amass treasure, you attack those who already have it. The Raid mechanic rewards ruthless aggression.

The River Heralds (And Their Elusive Merfolk!)

The Merfolk strategy revolves around being very difficult to block and growing via +1/+1 counters. They don't have a named keyword, and thus don't have a preview card. Don't fret if you are a fan of Merfolk as there are plenty of goodies in store for you.

The Legion of Dusk (And Their Bloodthirsty Vampires!)

The Vampires in this set don't have a named keyword as well, just like the Merfolk. Rather, their strategy revolves around the manipulation of life. If you choose to serve the Legion, you will find yourself paying life for powerful effects, regaining that life via lifelink and other abilities, and ultimately draining the life from your foes.

Ships Ahoy!

Vehicles make their return in Ixalan, ready to ferry your forces to victory. Each Vehicle starts out as just an artifact. Well, an artifact with some potential. But they won't just get up and attack your opponent by themselves, not even Ixalan has mastered the self-driving Pirate ship yet. Each Vehicle has a crew ability that turns it into an artifact creature.

Discovering A Whole New Face

Double-faced cards are making their return to Ixalan. But instead of showing a creature transforming into another version of itself, the double-faced cards of this set highlights the tales and tools of discovery.

Planeswalker of Legend

All Planeswalker of the past, present, and future will have the supertype legendary starting with this set. They will also be subject to the "legend rule", which means the "Planeswalker Uniqueness Rule" is going away. In short, everything that' true about legendary permanents will now be true about legendary Planeswalker. Also, note that this does not mean legendary Planeswalker can be your Commander unless an ability says so.

The prerelease of Ixalan will be happening this weekend at selected game stores. These events are Sealed Deck format events, where players are given Prerelease Packs and time to construct a 40-card minimum deck. The official release date of Ixalan is on the 29th of September 2017 with a total of 279 cards for you to collect. Visit to find your nearest Magic: The Gathering stockist hosting a Prerelease event.
