Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs in the world, yet they can defy all hardships to raise us to be a valuable member of the society. Of course, it’s not fair to generalize this sentiment on all of them, but more often than not they fell in the strong, positive and caring spectrum, as opposed to the abusive ones. This led to constant portrayals in entertainment media on how mothers always sacrifice themselves for the betterment of their children, which is only fitting as they are doing it in real life every day.
Video games also have their fair share of super moms, and in honor of Mother’s Day, we take a look at the top 7 female characters who’ll excel in the role in real life. While some of them are not a mother themselves in the virtual world, but as we all know, you don’t need to bear a child to have the qualities in becoming a kickass guardian. Beware, there might be spoilers ahead if you haven't completed some of the games stated below.
Marle / Princess Nadia (Chrono Trigger)
We were first introduced to Marle as some sort of a rebel teenager, who chose to ignore her father’s orders and leave the castle. She was then sent back into the past after an accident, and as we go through an adventure through time to unravel the ongoing mystery, Marle eventually matured and played an integral role in saving the world. Having royalty blood already puts her in the badass category as a real life mum, but it’s even better since she got plenty of stories to share from different ages, rendering bedtime story a rather exciting affair that’ll keep us awake instead of falling asleep.
Tess (The Last of Us)
Living in a post-apocalyptic world, Tess has the typical characteristics of a hardened survivor: ruthless, straightforward, and the ability to do what’s needed to be done. But underneath the hard persona, she can also be caring and empathetic, as shown in her interactions with Ellie, despite initially viewing the teenager as just a cargo to smuggle. Most importantly, she chose to rely on hope even though there’s a slim chance that it’ll work, which is what mothers often do. We always dream of living in a zombie-infested world, and now we know who the perfect mom to keep us alive is.
Nora Estheim (Final Fantasy XIII)
We all know mothers are tough, and Nora is the embodiment of that statement. Heck, she even made a point to say it out loud in-game, just to make sure we get it. Nora ended joining up with the rebels for a while, but her stint as a fighter was short-lived after she died saving Snow. At least she left a lasting legacy by having her straightforward quote turned into a meme, which sounds cool, or not.
Aloy (Horizon Zero Dawn)
Growing up as an outcast, Aloy learned the fundamentals on how to treat others the way she wants to be treated, and it helped develop her independent way of life. This is a trait often seen in single mothers, as they rely on themselves without the constant need of assistance. She is also resourceful and insanely good with a bow and arrow, making a trip to nature one of the most exciting activity we can do with Aloy as our mother. The classic hypothetical scenario of being stranded on a deserted island won’t sound so bleak as well.
Jenova (Final Fantasy VII)
She or he, depending on which version of the game that you’ve played, might be an unorthodox choice for being a mother, but think about it, how awesome could it be to have an extraterrestrial creature as our maternal guardian? Just the mention of her name strikes fear in your enemies, and she technically gave birth to one of the most powerful brothers you could ever have. And Jenova does all that behind a huge experimental tube. Just make sure you don’t become obsessive just like your long silver-haired sibling.
Mother (core series Pokémon games)
Mothers tend to be supportive, unless you choose to play games over studying, but Pokémon moms go all out to ensure you chase your dreams of owning pets, be it in real life or virtual ones. They will also see you off with their blessings as you start your adventure in exploring the world, and even though you might end up at a faraway place, they are just a phone call away. You can also rely on them for medical attention, and in some cases, they can be your personal bank to store your hard-earned savings. Most importantly, the Running Shoes is one of the best gifts you can get from a Pokémon mother, which totally outclasses any sort of Yeezys or NMDs.
Ana Amari (Overwatch)
Having undergone such an illustrious career in the Overwatch team, Ana is at the ripe age of retirement, but it’s not slowing her down anytime soon. Paintball outings will definitely be a blast with the sharing of her sniping skills, and you don’t even need to worry about getting hurt since she can heal you on the go. Just make sure Ana doesn’t catch you still up and awake past normal hours, because she can easily put you to bed no matter how old you’ve grown.
