For better or worse, 2017 has come and go. Regardless of whether you’re still feeling salty over your newly-acquired Season 8 ranking on Overwatch or enjoying your PUBG marathon, it’s now 2018! And a new year means new stuff, experiences, people, memories and of course, new games!
Last year, the game industry (doing both God’s and Devil’s works) has been very generous in offering us a healthy serving of mouthwatering teasers for a variety of soon-to-be-released-in-2018 games. So what better way to start off your 2018 gaming experience than our helpful reminder on what games that you should totally level up your hype on!
MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD
This game has made multiple special guest appearances in various game conventions and anywhere online last year that someone living in Timbuktu would probably have heard of this game at least once. As its release date (January 26th) draws closer, you can bet your Star Wars Battlefront 2's in-game credits that this game will be blowing up in your news feed soon.
RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2
The ‘wild west’ version of the beloved GTA series finally got itself a second game, whetting fans’ appetite last year for more gun-slinging, horse-riding, kidnapping, sh#t talking, hostage-tying and plenty of action involving dust and sand getting everywhere.
Anything that kind of resembles or reminds us of Dark Souls and Bloodborne is always a welcome addition to the eclectic family of difficult but aesthetically pleasing video games. The presence of broody characters and ‘problematic favs’ are an added bonus.
SKULLS & BONES
This visual candy looks as yummy as some pirates’ treasure loot and fans’ timbers were genuinely shivered when Ubisoft released this teaser last year. No doubt that pirating gameplays and naval warfare will play significant roles in making this game a wild and wet ride.
SEA OF THIEVES
This game is only available for Microsoft users (also, a comic series adaptation of it will be published by Titan Comics) so before anyone wishes to start a passionate but unnecessary ‘Microsoft vs. Ubisoft’ debate, let us peacefully move along to the next game in our list…
GOD OF WAR
This is a blockbuster that showcases a father and son’s bonding adventure that would probably tug your heartstrings while keeping you on the edge of your seat. Saltiness towards that kiddo may be expected.
To get a good grasp of what this game will entail is easy. Simply note the edgy and alternative-leaning spelling of the title. Then, take note of the Gothic theme and the presence of vampires. Voila, now you have yourself a game that could surpass expectations or do the complete opposite.
Some of us were already ‘whipped’ from watching this trailer. Mic drop.
BLOODSTAINED: RITUAL OF THE NIGHT
This Kickstarter-funded game is touted as Castlevania's spiritual successor. Enough said.
Watching this chilling gameplay is bordering on agonising. Now, imagine playing the real deal. If horror and explicit graphics are your kinks, Agony is totally right up your dark alley.
DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN
This one’s narrative has the Humans vs. Androids theme with the underlying ‘us vs. them’ mentality/trope thrown in for good measure. Judging from public’s responses towards this game’s gameplay/teaser videos, the expectation bar was pretty high for this one. Nonetheless, it’s not a surprise if Detroit: Become Human will become a hit once it’s released.
THE WOLF AMONG US SEASON 2
OF COURSE, THERE’S HYPE.
GHOST OF TSUSHIMA
We recently wrote about a few awesome open world games in one of our articles and I’m more than happy to add another title right in this article. As they say, the more, the merrier. Also, Samurai warriors in any narrative medium are cool, especially in video games! For Honor was a whole different story though *coughs*.
ATTACK ON TITAN 2
This game is dropping in March so this will satiate your Attack on Titan thirstiness while y’all wait for the anime’s season 3 to grace your screens.
METAL GEAR SURVIVE
This game’s hype is directly proportional to its number of haters. The high amount of dislikes on any video that features Metal Gear Survive indicates a similar situation that happened to *ahem* a famous game series (read: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare) a while ago. Could this be some sort of foreboding?
“BioMutant is an open-world, post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fable RPG, with a unique martial arts styled combat system allowing you to mix melee, shooting and mutant ability action.” Consider me sold.
How I described this game: First person shooter with mutants in post-apocalyptic Moscow.
What I thought about this game: *Makes some COD jokes*
EA SPORTS UFC 3
When you are bored from the usual Mortal Kombat/Tekken/Street Fighter affairs, try MMA instead!
