The massive, epic-looking Scalebearer from Quake Champions gets his 47 seconds of fame in new trailer

The Scalebearer champion in Quake Champions is what the previously-revealed champion, Nyx, isn't. For starters, he's not waifu material. At all. Second, he's massive and covered in either armour, carapace or muscle. Thought Fathom Agent sounded totally cool and badass? Well, the Scalebearer is a freaking Galactic Warlord. And stealth? Screw that, because this guy is all about straightforward brute force.

With such a massive and intimadating form, I'm glad that the Scalebearer's abilities - both the active one and the passive one - don't just reflect that but seem to be pretty much based around that aspect. His active, Bull Rush, has him charge forwards and reduce the enemy he hits into nothing but blood. His passive, Heavyweight, results in enemies that he lands on being reduced to nothing but blood. He literally crushes them, and they just burst like a wet sack. Now all I need to wrap up the satisfaction is to have him appear in Avengers: Infinity War and engage in a fist fight with Drax or Thor (or the Hulk).

As PC Gamer noticed, the Scalebearer's backstory seems tied with Nyx's. "As a warlord of the marauding Greiss, he conquered countless worlds, plundering technology to strengthen his armies," reads the Scalebearer's description. "But defeat by a reclusive, phase-shifting race led to his exile. Obsessed with vengeance, he discovered their power source: an ancient shrine with a seething sphere of liquid within. When at last he slaughtered its guardians and entered, the sphere consumed him—and he vanished. He awoke in a bizarre, brutal realm, transformed by arcane energy. Now he seeks a way back, to regain his command and wield his newfound might."

Nyx's race, the Malem are capable of phase-shifting, and her description mentions the Malem being besieged by "hulking, chitinous marauders", with one of those marauders breaching the Fathom Orb that grants the Malem their Ghost Walk ability. Add the fact that the Scalebearer and Nyx are polar opposites in terms of both profile and abilities and their apparent connection feels natural and certain. Perhaps there will be voicelines that confirm this.

The Quake Champions closed beta is coming soon, and sign-ups can be done on the website. The full release will be free-to-play, but owning all of the game's launch Champions will require money.
