Just over a month ago, the Hitman franchise was reportedly facing an uncertain future after Square Enix parted ways from series developer IO Interactive. Fans were concern that the most famous assassin in the gaming world will be forced into early retirement, but their worries were alleviated when IO reclaimed their independence and the Hitman IP from the Japanese gaming giant last week.
To celebrate the new direction, IO is giving free access to the beginning of Hitman on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. This includes everything in the first location, namely the two story missions, two Escalation contracts, and more than 40 challenges with 17 Achievements / Trophies.
"I'm proud to announce that our first hello as an independent studio is to invite all gamers to play the beginning of Hitman for free," said IO boss Hakan Abrak. "There is a lot of love out there for Hitman and with this offering we hope that many more will fall in love with the game. We believe that this is Hitman at its best. So jump in and give a try."
This is a good move on IO’s part in trying to boost the sales of Hitman, which were surprisingly low despite its critical reception. But it remains to be seen how they’ll move the franchise forward, considering there were plans for Season 2 and Season 3.
