The new God of War is easily one of the best video game of the year with an unexpected twist. He steps back into the shoes of parenthood as a father to Atreus, a dutiful son who tags along to read runes and shoot arrows.
Even so, the strong bond of fatherhood is not only limited by blood. Some can be a mentor while others muddle up what being a father exactly is in video games. In this article, we count down 8 coolest and best video game fathers.
Kratos (God of War)
This is not the first time Kratos became a father but not for long enough. He was blinded by the power of Ares and was tricked into killing his own daughter and wife. This Greek God of War has gone through a lot without showing any signs of slowing down yet.
The current God of War gives Kratos a second chance to become a father in the whole new Norse mythology. Kratos’ love for his son permeates in every path he takes that shapes up into a good, polished story of God of War.
Ethan Mars (Heavy Rain)
The picture-perfect life of Ethan Mars dissipated quickly after the loss of his first son, Jason, in a car accident that eventually broke up his marriage as well. Sadly tragedy strikes again when his second son, Shaun, was abducted by the Origami Killer.
In this game led by multiple choices, Ethan can choose either to be “the father who couldn’t bear to lose another son so he did whatever it takes to save his son by going through the harrowing ordeals staged by the Origami Killer” or “the father who had enough of this world so he just gave up”. But if you chose the former, the Origami Killer picked the wrong father to have beef with.
Lee Everett (The Walking Dead: Season One)
During an early outbreak of zombie apocalypse, fate binded Lee to meet Clementine, a young girl who was left alone in her house. Despite both being unrelated by blood, Lee profoundly cared about Clementine’s welfare to his last breath, which left a gaping hole in my heart.
He taught her everything that she needed to know to survive in the horrible post-apocalyptic world; from teaching her how to shoot a gun to knowing the importance of personal hair grooming.
James (Fallout 3)
Voiced by Liam Neeson, James is the paragon of hero of Fallout 3. He celebrated his son’s birthday together and even watched his son grew up in Vault 101 but one day he disappeared without any notice. But his disappearance was not in vain.
As the leader of Project Purity, his main goal was to cleanse the water for The Wasteland. Lone Wanderer managed to reunite with his father once again but James was willing to put his life down on the line to save his son while, at the same time, thwarting Enclave’s plan to take control of Project Purity.
Joel (The Last of Us)
Joel was a young father who watched his 9-year-old daughter, Sarah, die in his arms after she was shot to death by the military during the brink of the Cordyceps outbreak. As a harden, worn-out survivor, he had to smuggle a 14-year-old girl, Ellie, who was immune to the Cordyceps fungi to the Fireflies in the hope of finding a cure for humanity.
The challenges that they both encountered through their journey across North America made them stronger together although they weren’t related, but the shocking ending of The Last of Us forced us to see the double-edged outcomes of their relationship. Honestly, we can’t wait to see what (or who) pissed Ellie off in The Last of Us: Part 2
John Marston (Red Dead Redemption)
After the not-so pact with FBI to hunt down his previous gang leaders and members, former outlaw John Marston just wanted to sweep his past behind him to live peacefully with his wife and son, Abigail and Jack. But the FBI went as far as to launch a surprise attack on him and his family. He sent his family to safety away and became the last man standing at the ranch between his family and the FBI. Before John had a chance to reunite back with his family, he was mercilessly gunned down by the federal agents.
After the harrowing incident, Jack suffered from depression of his parents’ sudden death. Still, he manages to deliver justice to the man who was responsible for his father’s death by killing him in a duel. The upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 will take us back into John’s past through the eyes of his fellow gang Member, Arthur Morgan.
Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Uncharted)
In the Uncharted series, Sully expressed that he never wished to become a father until he met a teenager that pickpocketed his wallet while walking in the streets of Colombia. This teenager was revealed to be Nathan Drake. Impressed by his ability, Sully took Nathan under his wing and raised him to become a master in dealing with acquiring historical artifacts.
More than just a mentor, both Sully and Nathan have gone through so much together that Sully is essentially a moral compass for Nathan, holding him together in times of his vulnerabilities such as keeping his own ego in check in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and saving his marriage with Elena in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
Harry Mason (Silent Hill 1 and 3)
When Harry Mason and his wife, Jodie met a baby on the road side, it seems their prayers have been answered and they named the baby, Cheryl. Not long after that, Jodie passed away due to a terminal illness, leaving Harry to raise Cheryl alone.
Harry was still overwhelmed by grief over his wife’s death so Cheryl persuaded his dad to take a retreat together at Silent Hill, but it was a bad plan all along. His adopted daughter went missing in the foggy, spooky town of Silent Hill. He fought through every demon in order to find his daughter not once but twice in Silent Hill 3. Although Silent Hill 3 continued the story of Heather as the reincarnation of Cheryl, Harry remained to be a loving father to Heather.
