Strategy JRPG Disgaea Makes Its Way To Mobile

Following in the vein of Fire Emblem Heroes, another tactical JRPG is making the jump to smartphones this August, Nippon Ichi’s Disgaea. A new trailer was shown off today featuring gameplay from the new game and more.

Featuring Kaori Mizuhashi, the voice actress for series regular Laharl, the mobile iteration was shown off for the first time with Mizuhashi commentating on the new game. The game looks to retain the main gameplay of the series and the iconic, sprite-based artstyle.

The game blends the isometric, tactical gameplay with the modern “gatcha” conventions of mobile games. So as you make your way to defeat hordes of demons and monsters, you can collect various heroes and units from all 5 Disgaea games. This includes series staples like Laharl, Etna, and Flonne.

Disgaea has always had a cult-following. While not as big as other contemporaries like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, it is popular enough to garner more than five instalments in the series. The latest entry in the series, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, was released for the PS4 in 2015, was ported to the Switch in 2017, and is coming to PCs this year.

The game is slated to be released in Japan this August 4th for IOS and Android smartphones. Judging from the trend of other games of the genre making it worldwide with varying degrees of success, we can be sure that an English version of Disgaea will be making its way to our phones sometime in the future.
