World Cup is season is truly here, with football fans enlivened as the FIFA World Cup heads towards its semifinals. If you’re a mobile gamer like most of us, then football may not be your cup of tea. Instead, why not tune in to the Arena of Valor World Cup, starting on the 18th of July!
Arena of Valor has steadily been increasing its fan base since its inception to the mobile gaming scene in 2015. Developed by Tencent Games, it has since been the go-to MOBA for most players around the world, especially in South East Asia. The game while primarily a mobile game, will soon hit the Nintendo Switch in a few weeks and is currently in Beta on the system.
As with most popular MOBAs, naturally tournaments will spawn and players from all over the world will come together to compete for the grand prize. Many regional tournaments have come and gone, with the Arena of Valor World Cup being the first of its kind, bringing 12 teams from all over the world to compete and escalating Tencent’s MOBA into a significant eSport.
The World Cup will start on July 18th and 19th, where the group stage will commence and the initial 12 teams will face-off. The quarter finals will then take place on July 21st and 22nd. The grand finals will then begin on July 27th and 28th, taking place in the iconic Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, where the last two teams will fight for the grand prize of $550,00 USD.
The 12 teams will broken up into 4 groups. Group A includes Thailand, North America, and Singapore. Group B consist of Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Group C has Korea, the Chinese Taipei Wildcard and Europe. Group D will have the Thailand Wildcard, China, and South America teams. A large majority of the teams are from the SEA region, showing how popular AOV really is in this part of the world.
