By Dale Bashir on Oct 1, 2018

The last time we covered the HP Omen, we only knew on the surface of what to expect from the latest in HP’s line of gaming laptops. After the release, we got ourselves a hold of the coveted 2018 variant of the laptop and tried it out. Spoiler alert: It’s pretty good. Here’s our review of the 2018 HP Omen:

It’s no secret that the HP Omen is a bonafide gaming laptop, and is easily able to run games like PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds, Fortnite, or even Sonic Mania. The graphical fidelity and processing power of this laptop is never in question thanks to the power of the Core i5-8300H processor and the GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics card. With the new 2018 HP Omen 15, there’s a number of quality of life changes that makes this a worthwhile gaming laptop.

As previously mentioned, the 2018 HP Omen is definitely a welcome upgrade to the previous iteration. Besides the upgrades in terms of processing power and battery life, the aforementioned rearrangement of its internals really does help out with the overall cooling of the laptop to avoid unwanted overheating.

If you’re thinking of doing a lot of work on the Omen, transferring files on this laptop is lightning fast, especially with the DDR4 8 GB memory. This makes organizing your documents or even transferring your system files from a previous laptop a breeze.  Besides the applications in gaming, this also helps if you’re doing a lot of multi-tasking with the Omen, and also helps with video rendering if you’re editing videos on it.

One surprising aspect with the 2018 HP Omen is the Omen Control Center,  which is very useful with an intuitive layout, and it’s as user-friendly as you can get. It’s an easy way to check  the stats and the overall performance of the machine. The customizable keystrokes and colours is also a neat addition to the Omen line, and also the anti-ghosting keystrokes helps with quick presses and multiple keys at once. This feature could really help out when playing games like DOTA 2 or PUBG.

Some minor gripes does come with the new Omen, however.  The audio drivers, in particular, have a little lag to them. For instance,  when you plug in your earphones to the audio jack, it’ll take a few seconds longer for it to register properly.  A minor inconvenience, but still worth noting. The speakers can also be quite loud in terms of volume, so depending on the media, you would really need to rebalance all the audio channels.

The matte display, one of the Omen’s main features, has an annoying glare when in certain angles under sunlight. It’s definitely a preference thing, but  that’s just our opinion. And lastly, the size of the laptop can sometimes be a bit awkward. The laptop spans about 15 inches, which is very particular, and may not fit some cases and bags.

So overall, the 2018 HP Omen 15 is an excellent on-the-go gaming laptop.  It does all the expected gaming it needs to do, while adding a number of quality of life features. Sure, there are minor gripes here and there, but it definitely shouldn’t hamper the the laptop’s overall performance. If you are looking for a brand new laptop with all the bells and whistles at a reasonable price, look no further than the HP Omen 15. Keep up with Gamehubs on Facebook and Twitter to be up to date on all things gaming.
