Blizzard has no doubt developed a bona fide eSports hit with Overwatch, and while it has many ups and downs to it as most eSports do, one thing that Blizzard has to tolerate time and time again is player discipline. Keeping players in line in terms of sportsmanship is definitely a challenge, and something other sports do well, like football with its red card and yellow card systems. But Blizzard being Blizzard, they had to do things their way.
Throughout the new 2019 season of the Overwatch League, Blizzard will be keeping tabs on their players with a discipline tracker. Meaning that every misconduct or misdemeanor will be recorded on a per player basis. It's one thing for Blizzard to eliminate toxicity in their games, but to outright police their players is another thing.
The official post by Blizzard states: "As players join the Overwatch League, the league office conducts a full review of their conduct and, where appropriate, takes disciplinary action." On the same official post, they don't mention what the actual disciplinary actions are, though they do mention suspensions and fines. Once we see this tracker at work throughout the season, we can definitely see how far players and Blizzard will go on these actions.
Overall, it is a huge step for a major eSports league to be enacting on their player's discipline. It definitely worked on more mainstream sports, so its high time for eSports to do the same. Though some might see this as a 1984, Big Brotheresque way of approaching things. What do you guys think? Keep up with Gamehubs on Facebook and Twitter to be up to date on all things gaming!
