NieR: Automata's PC release date has been confirmed! (Updated: Currently region-locked in Asia)

By Melvyn Tan on Mar 4, 2017

Update: At time of writing, comments on the NieR: Automata Facebook page indicate that those in Asian countries are unable to access the game's Steam store page. On the other hand, it is available for pre-order in western countries.

This brings to mind the PC port of Metal Gear Revengeance, which was also made by Platinum Games and not made available in Asian regions. Hopefully, that won't be repeated again and things are just delayed for us in Asia. It's worth mentioning that even Japan doesn't have a Steam store page for NieR: Automata yet. However, a recent Reddit comment pointed out that the game's Japanese Twitter page announced that its Japanese Steam store page will be going up "shortly". Whether the same will happen to other Asian countries remains to be seen.

If you want to look at things from a positive perspective, the Facebook post concerning the matter says that the game "is being released worldwide on PC on 17th March 2017 and you can pre-purchase on Steam right now", and it's possible that the "woridwide" part still applies to the game's release, just not its pre-purchase at the moment.

Original story: As the PS4 release date of the English version of NieR: Automata drew ever closer (it's coming out on March 7), the lack of a PC release date became ever worrying. Luckily, all worries about a long delay can be cast aside now, for the release date has been revealed to be March 17!

That's a week later than the previously-revealed-then-pulled release date of March 10, and while I'd have preferred it to launch simultaneously with the console version, it's not too bad, right? The social media announcements revealed the Day One Edition's pre-order bonus too, namely a Valve Character Accessory that goes over 2B's obscured right eye. Aside from that, it contains the same items as the PS4 version, namely the Machine Mask Accessory, Grimoire Weiss Pod, Play System Pod Skin, Retro Grey Pod Skin, Retro Red Skin and Cardboard Pod Skin.

Unfortunately, a Steam store page for the game hasn't popped up yet, and the Square Enix store page for the PC version has vanished too, so you won't be able to pre-order from these two places for now. The system requirements have been revealed by Square Enix however (ta, Gematsu). Hopefully, we'll get to see a PC demo too.

  • “Reliquary” System – Players can return to where their characters were defeated to gain additional buffs, or even gain an ally to assist in their battle against the fearsome machines.

  • Riding System – Players can ride boars and other wildlife for quicker travel, while also using them to attack.
  • Quest Hub – As players immerse themselves in the desolate world, they can take on a variety of sub-quests from multiple Quest Hubs scattered throughout.
  • Fishing Minigame Players can catch a variety of fish through this mini-game to sell or gain temporary beneficial status effect.
