Mercy has been a hated character in Overwatch for quite some time now as she is a very easy and straight forward hero to master and a lot of players are using her to climb up in ranks. Hold down left mouse button to heal, right button to damage boost, shift to fly around, and Q to resurrect fallen teammates. With the latest Overwatch PTR patch, gone are the days where you will see Mercy getting Play of the Game for resurrecting 5 men as she received a rework to her kit. Besides Mercy, D.Va will also be getting a brand new ability to compensate her lack of ability to cast as well as a nerf to her Defense Matrix.
Developer Comments: While resurrecting downed allies is a core part of Mercy’s gameplay, the way her Ultimate functioned was causing a number of problems. It was frustrating to play against, and it incentivized Mercy players to hide away from important battles, instead of taking part in them. This version turns Resurrect into a single target ability. It’s still an important part of Mercy’s kit, but plays much better for both Mercy players and her enemies. Valkyrie, her new Ultimate, gives her the opportunity to make big game-making plays and opens a number of new options for her.
In the latest Developer Update, Overwatch Game Director, Jeff Kaplan stated that people are not playing Mercy as it is intended. Often times you will see Mercy hiding in a corner when her ultimate is fully charged and only appear when she can use activate Resurrect. "We think it's wrong to tell a main healing character to go off and hide somewhere and stop healing for some period of time. We felt like her Resurrect was something we needed to address," Kaplan mentioned in the Developer Update.
After her rework, Mercy is now a more complicated hero to play. Resurrect is now a 30-second cooldown, single target secondary ability, and her ultimate is now called Valkyrie. "It becomes a really cool strategic moment in deciding who to Resurrect and when. Her new ultimate is called Valkyrie, and it does a lot: First, it allows Mercy to fly. Like, totally fly. No boosters, she just flies," Kaplan explained. "Everything else about Mercy is just better when it's activated, too. Her beams have further distances and chain to multiple targets. She can Guardian Angel further, and she does more damage from her gun."
Developer Comments: D.Va’s Defense Matrix uptime has proven to be too strong, but simply reducing it without making other changes would make her too weak (and far less interesting to play). Instead, we’re adding a new ability, and giving her the ability to fire while flying. These changes give D.Va a lot of new options while maintaining Defense Matrix’s ability to shut down big enemy attacks.
Besides the Micro Missiles, there are still other changes that are being tested internally by the Overwatch team, which Kaplan did not mention the details. Reinhardt will also receive a minor buff to his Barrier Field. Players can now rotate the camera by pressing primary fire when the shield is activated so that they can be more aware of their surroundings while blocking the damage from enemies.
Developer Comments: This change gives Reinhardt more situational awareness while using his shield, allowing him to keep an eye on the battlefield while still protecting his team.
As everything is still being tested in the PTR, nothing is finalized just yet. Try out all these awesome changes and do send in your feedback to the Overwatch team. You can join the Overwatch PTR by selecting it in the server section.
