Announced today on Sonic the Hedgehog's official Twitter, the two-player competitive mode that was previously on Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is back for Sonic Mania.
Competition Mode returns! Challenge your friends locally, but remember: speed isn't the only way to win. pic.twitter.com/fAGVQV12WZ— Sonic the Hedgehog (@sonic_hedgehog) August 8, 2017
The footage shows Sonic and Knuckles The Echidna racing against each other in the revamped Green Hill Zone, dodging hazards, destroying enemies, going through loop-de-loops and taking generally different paths to get to the same goal at the end of the stage. In the video, the Sonic player's pure speed game style was no match for the player controlling Knuckle's glide abilities combined with his more careful approach to the stage and its branching layout.
At the end of the stage, the two players scores are tallied through the rings they have at the end of the stage, total rings throughout the stage, their overall stage score, how many items they picked up along the way and the time it took to finish the stage. As such, being fast alone is not enough, players must know the stage layout, know the fastest way to the end and collect as many points as possible along the way.
So far Sonic Mania looks to be a blast and this competitive mode is a nice bonus. Sonic Mania arrives on all major platforms in a week, on the 15th of August 2017.
