League of Legends Preseason will begin shortly after Worlds 2017 comes to an end, which means we have slightly more than one month before things change for 2018 season. The main changes that will be coming to the game are Runes Reforged, IP, Blue Essence, and more. There are a lot of things to digest so let's get right into it.
Discover New Runes
As mentioned a few months back, Riot is combining runes and masteries into a single, streamlined system that you can use to adapt and customize your playstyle in champ select. Runes Reforged concentrates your pre-game power into a focused set of options, so every choice matters more. All 60 of the new runes are free. There are 5 different categories of runes: Precision, Domination, Sorcery, Resolve, Inspiration. Let's take a look at the Keystone Runes for each category.
The Precision category grants improved attacks and sustained damage and it benefits ADCs a lot.
1. Press the Attack
Attacking the same champion grants endlessly stacking attack damage (1.5-4 AD per stack, doubled for melee champion). When you switch targets you keep half of your stacks.
2. Lethal Tempo
1.5 seconds after damaging a champion gain 30%-80% attack speed (based on level) for 3 seconds. Attacking a champion extends the effect to 6 seconds. Lethal Tempo allows you to temporarily exceed the attack speed limit.
3. Fleet Footwork
Attacking and moving builds Energy stacks. At 100 stacks, your next attack is Energized. Energized attacks heal you for 5-50 (+0.10 Bonus AD, +0.20 AP) and grant 30% increased movement speed for 1 second.
Domination will give Assassins extra burst damage and Junglers a target access.
Hitting a champion with 3 unique attacks or abilities within 2 seconds deals bonus adaptive damage.
Enchant your boots with the active effect 'Predator.' Channel for 3 seconds out of combat to gain 45% movement speed for 15 seconds. Damaging attacks or abilities end this effect, dealing 60 - 140 (+0.2 bonus AD)(+0.3 AP) bonus adaptive damage. Starts the game on cooldown and goes on cooldown if interrupted while channeling.
3. Dark Harvest
Champions, large minions, and large monsters drop soul essence on death. Collecting souls causes your next attack on a champion or structure within 20 seconds to deal bonus adaptive damage. Bonus damage: 60-100 (+0.15 bonus AD) (+0.1 AP) + soul essence collected.
Empowered abilities and resource manipulation for Mages and Supports.
Your attacks and abilities send Aerie to a target damaging enemies or shielding allies.
2. Arcane Comet
Damaging a champion with an ability hurls a comet at their location. Damage (Adaptive): 40-100 based on level (+0.2AP and 0.35 bonus AD)
3. Phase Rush
Hitting an enemy champion with 3 unique attacks or abilities within 2 seconds grants 30 - 60% Movement Speed based on level.
Enhanced durability and crowd control for Tanks.
Grasp of the Undying
Every 4 seconds in combat, your next basic attack on a Champion will:
Right-clicking an allied champion places a guard on that ally for 3 seconds. Before you or that ally would take damage, you're both granted a shield for 2.5 seconds. 45 second cooldown, 6 seconds if the shield doesn't activate.
After immobilizing an enemy champion, increase your current Armor and Magic Resist by 10%+30% for 2.5 seconds. Then, after 2.5 deal damage to nearby enemies.
Creative tools and rule bending for everyone!
Basic attacking a champion slows them for 2 seconds (6-3 second per-unit cooldown). The slow increases in strength over its duration. Ranged attacks slow by up to 25%-40%. Melee attacks slow by up to 35%-50%. Slowing a champion with active items shoots a freeze ray through them, freezing the nearby ground for 5 seconds, slowing all units inside by 50% (max 3 rays per item use).
2. Summoner Specialist
Gain 15% Summoner Spell cooldown reduction and you can swap one of your Summoner Spells to a different one at the shop for 1 Summoner Shard. Gain your first Summoner Shard at 2 minutes, and another every 6 minutes after (Max 2 shards). Buying a Smite won't grant access to Smite items and you cannot have two of the same Summoner Spells.
3. Coming Soon!
Level Beyond 30
Riot Games has decided to remove the player level 30 cap, and the new cap is… infinity! We're also replacing the IP grind with a revamped rewards system that levels up with you.
Level Up, Get Loot
Instead of getting IP after every game, you'll receive an unlocked chest each time you level up. Capsules contain champ shards and blue essence, and if you hit special milestone levels, you'll earn special rewards like gemstones or rare emotes.
IP Turns Blue
To tie all these changes together, Riot is connecting the leveling and loot systems by merging IP and blue essence. The newer, bluer essence will work in all the places IP and BE worked before, including loot and the champion store. And everything in the store will cost the same as it did in the old, IP-based system—for example, it'll be 6300 BE for a newer champ like Kayn.
With runes soon becoming free, for every rune or rune page you bought before the 2017 season began, Riot will reward you a little blue gift. Runes purchased during the 2017 season will be fully refunded.
Enter The Essence Emporium
The transition will leave some of you with more blue essence than you know what to do with, so Riot Games got something extra planned for everyone. At the start of Preseason, after converting your IP into blue essence, we'll open up a limited-time blue essence store. You’ll be able to purchase things like ward skins, chromas, and (especially for veterans) a few super-rare items like the URFWick skin.
You've put in serious hours on the Rift. Show off your veteran status with an exclusive emote. The more you've played, the better your emote will be.
Preseason will be live on November 8th, and you can expect more updates this preseason, including balance changes for every single champion in the game to support Runes Reforged. You can head over to the Preseason webpage to theorycraft some new rune builds. Be sure to look out for the patch notes on November 7th, the day before preseason hits.
