As Hyperplay, the first ever ASEAN esports and music festival, came to an end last weekend, superstars Nick Jonas and Alessia Cara graced the stage of the Singapore Indoor Stadium and ended the weekend with a bang. At the same stage just moments before, Malaysia’s very own League of Legends esports team, Kuala Lumpur Hunters, emerged victorious.
The Hyperplay League of Legends Grand Finals saw Malaysia’s KL Hunters goingwent head to head against Vietnam’s Super Star Destroyer. The latter had previously beat KL Hunters 0-2 during the group stages, so the Hunters came into the finals with a bone to pick.
Despite being the crowd favourite, the Vietnamese team suffered a 63-death bloodbath and in a 2-0 sweep, KLH were crowned as the first-ever Hyperplay ASEAN League of Legends Champions. Each team member walked away with a Razer Blade HD 256GB gaming laptop (worth US$12,000).
While KLH may have won this competition, they have no time to recover as the League of Legends SEA Tours is just around the corner. If they want to stand a chance to attend the World Championship, they need to beat the best from all over South East Asia in the Philippines at this qualifier.
