The previous teaser that was released by Blizzard few days ago was actually pointing towards a new map as Blizzard has announced that Horizon Lunar Colony will be Overwatch's latest map.
Horizon Lunar Colony is an Assault map (2CP) like Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries and Hanamura. This is the first map that is not set in Planet Earth, and the best part is that it features a low gravity area that acts as a flanking route.
According to Overwatch Gamepedia, The Horizon Lunar Colony is a moon base constructed by Lucheng Interstellar, a Chinese company specializing in the space industry and established as part of humanity's renewed focus on space exploration. In addition to the scientists that worked there were a group of genetically enhanced gorillas that were intended to test the effects of prolonged habitation in space. The experiments came to an end when the gorillas launched an uprising, killing the scientists and claiming the base for their own. It has been indicated that they are so far happy to stay within the base.
As reported by Atlas News, a news outlet in the Overwatch Universe, Lucheng Interstellar revealed that Horizon Lunar Colony's databases and monitoring system are still up and running after it went offline for years.
Nearly 2 months ago, The Overwatch team reported that there will be 6 new maps coming to the game, 3 standard maps for Quick Play and Competitive Play, as well as 3 new maps for Arcade which was already released during the Anniversary event- Black Forest, Castillo and Necropolis. Horizon Lunar Colony will be the first standard map to be added to Overwatch this year and the fourth new map in the game.
Overwatch Game Director, Jeff Kaplan stated that the entire map initially had low gravity as it is set on the moon but it will affect the game in a negative way. "When you talk about the moon, you have to instantly talk about gravity because we know that there is low gravity on the moon. We started to think about how might that play in Overwatch, Kaplan said. "We've explored a lot of different options for the moon map. At first we have low gravity in the whole map, and we felt that it sort of turned the game a little bit into a gimmick. While it was fun for a little bit, it broke the game in some ways while fun took away the competitive nature of Overwatch and the solid feel of the game."
In order to allow players to experience the fun that the Overwatch team had, Blizzard decided to add a new Arcade mode that features low gravity not only in Horizon Lunar Colony, but in all existing maps. Furthermore, a new setting to alter the gravity will be added to custom games for Overwatch players to goof around and have some fun.
Horizon Lunar Colony is now available to play and test in the Overwatch PTR and it will be available in live servers once the testing phase is over. Try hopping into a game in that map or create a custom game and explore the map thoroughly as Jeff Kaplan said that there are some interesting elements within the map that tells the story behind the gorillas and scientists.
