Guide: Tips on conquering your opponents in the three new Overwatch Arena Maps and how does the new Elimination rules work

By Kurtis Chan on May 24, 2017

The Overwatch Anniversary event kicked off today. More than 100 new cosmetics item are added into the game, as well as three new Arena Maps- Black Forest, Castillo and Necropolis. All three of these maps, along with Ecopoint Antarctica will be featured in two of the tweaked game mode- Lockout Elimination 3v3 and Limited Duel 1v1.

Black Forest

On the outskirts of Eichenwalde, the misty Black Forest map wraps around a long-overlooked battlefield dotted with the wreckage of Bastion units. Flank your opponents on pathways between the castle and woods, and use the wooden balconies to move between the second stories of houses throughout the forest.

Black Forest is a rather small map where skirmishes can happen instantly once the match starts. Heroes who are strong in small spaces like Roadhog, Reaper and Junkrat are ideal picks for this map.

Castillo is an old fort looking out over Dorado’s bay. It’s the location of Calaveras, a bar frequented by questionable patrons; a graffitied Los Muertos hangout; and Sombra’s hacking den. Test your skills against the enemy team throughout Castillo’s multiple levels, and use its winding stairs for cover and strategic advantage.

Flankers like Tracer and Genji are great heroes to play in Castillo. Castillo is a circular map where there are several corners to hide, sneak up on your enemies with a flank and they will stand little to no chance of surviving (provided that you are able to aim properly that is), which makes flankers a top tier pick in this map.

Ana Amari has made Necropolis her personal hideout—and an impromptu field base where she can keep an eye on things. Head to Ana’s preferred vantage point at the top of the ruins, and use the high ground (and the element of surprise) against the enemy team. Or walk the stone corridors below, and take the fight to them directly—just watch out for pits!

Snipers are good choices in this map. As stated above, Ana has a preferred vantage point at the top of the ruins and you can take your time to snipe down enemies if the heroes they picked have no way to make it up there. Pharah and Lucio are strong against enemies who have to stay on the ground, due to the fact that they can boop enemies into the pit for an easy environmental kill. Just beware of snipers if you are playing as Pharah.

Lockout Elimination 3v3

Lockout Elimination 3v3 is similar to the previous 3v3 Arcade game mode, but there is a slight twist to it. The round-winning team composition cannot be repeat in later rounds as those heroes will be removed and there is no other way to select them again unless you jump into a new game.

This new ruleset will be able to determine whether a player is in team flex or team one trick. One trick ponies will not fare well in this game mode and it challenges a player's ability to play other heroes except for his or her main. Let's say your team consists of Pharah, Mercy and Roadhog and you won the round, you will not be able to choose these 3 heroes for the remainder of the game.

Another new rule that has been implemented in this game mode is that after a certain amount of time has passed and a winning team has not been determined, a control point will appear at the center of the map and whichever team captures it first or wipes off the enemy team first will be the victor. This new rule forces players to come out from hiding or they will suffer a loss, while also eliminating draws from the game mode.

Tips: Get a well-rounded team composition each match, winning with three DPS will only remove them from the next round, causing your team to have less DPS options. Keep track of your enemies remaining hero pool, if you know what hero has been removed from your enemy, you can start predicting what hero they will pick next and you can choose a counter to it.

Limited Duel 1v1

The previous 1v1 game mode is a mystery duel whereby the game will randomly pick the same hero for both players and they will battle it out to see who is a better skilled player on that specific hero. For Limited Duel, it has the same winning condition as the old one, but instead of having the game selecting the hero for you, it will only allow you to choose from a set of three heroes, and both players will have the same set of heroes to choose from.

This game mode is like a game of rock, paper, scissors. Half of the time, you will pick a different hero from your opponent. If you're lucky and picked a counter to your opponent's hero, then you will have a huge advantage over him/her.

All three of these new Arena Maps are here to stay even after the Anniversary event ends. The settings for Lockout Elimination 3v3 and Limited Duel 1v1 game modes will be available in custom games but we are not sure whether both of these game modes will permanently replace the previous 1v1 and 3v3 or it is just here for the event. If you like playing both of these game modes, be sure to play to your heart's content during the event period.

Furthermore, playing these game modes also allows you to quickly earn additional loot boxes from the weekly Arcade rewards, and a loot box will be rewarded for your first win on both of these modes.

Tips: Know which hero is the best out of the three available, try to pick a hero that has self-healing abilities like Soldier:76 and Roadhog and the reason for it is self-explanatory. Get into your opponent's mind and predict what hero there are going to choose, you have a 33% chance of guessing it right anyway.

Enjoy all of these awesome new stuffs, including new skins, emotes, sprays and voice lines for you to unlock while celebrating Overwatch's one year anniversary. The Overwatch Anniversary event had just started today and will last till June 12 (timing varies from different region).
