Fortnite’s First Birthday And The Return Of Playground Mode

By Dale Bashir on Jul 24, 2018

Happy Birthday Fortnite! The seminal, sandbox, battle royale game turns 1 today. A year ago, nobody would have ever guessed that this little game would change the world of gaming as a whole. While technically, the game was released on the 25th of July 2017, the folks at Epic are rolling out the celebrations early starting today!

One thing to note that while the free-to-play Battle Royale mode came out in September of last year, the base Save The World mode came out first in July and was the introduction to the wacky world of Fortnite. With the celebrations coming out today, here are some of the rewards you can expect in coming playthroughs.

Birthday Presents For All

As with any massive celebration in Fortnite, fans can expect tons of rewards coming to them. Throughout the event, the Battle Bus itself will have a fresh new coat of paint as it brings you to the battlefield. There are also in-game cosmetics that you can earn from the Birthday Challenges and other in-game quests. Here are some ways you can earn rewards according to Epic’s website:

  • Deal 1,000 damage to opponents to unlock the Fortnite Birthday! Emoticon
  • Dance at different birthday cakes to unlock the Happy Birthday! Spray
  • Play 14 matches to unlock 5,000 XP.
  • Complete all 3 challenges to earn the Birthday Cake Back Bling

In addition to all the partying, you can also get back to a fan-favourite mode starting tomorrow. Playground mode is finally back after a 2 week long absence. Playground mode lets players be able to roam around the map, build anything they want and just have fun with their friends. It is a much needed mode, giving variety to the combat-based Battle Royale mode.

A Whole New Playground

Announced in a tweet by the official Fortnite Twitter account, there seems to be some changes to the overall Playground experience. You can roll around in the All-Terrain Karts with your squad mates, get way more loot, and can now only respawn as long as you don’t die in the storm. So while this mode is still fun, they’re adding making it a little more competitive after their post-mortem with the previous attempts at Playground mode.

The Fortnite Birthday Celebration will be available from now until August 7th, while the Playground mode will come to the game tomorrow along with the 5.1 patch. Happy Birthday Fortnite fans, here’s to another year of fun.
