When Devil May Cry 5 was announced during Microsoft’s conference in E3 2018, I was one of the excited fans who was trying hard to withhold her scream at 4am because the Devil May Cry series was finally making its latest comeback with Capcom.
Under the direction of Devil May Cry 4 director Hideaki Itsuno along with producers Matt Walker and Michiteru Okabe, the three of them shared some juicy development updates on one of the most anticipated games in 2019 during an interview session with Dengeki Online. Thanks to Resetera forum for the translation! With that, here are 5 details of Devil May Cry 5 straight from the horses’ mouths.
Devil May Cry 5 will continue the timeline of the main series as it will be a direct sequel to Devil May Cry 4 in 2008. According to Itsuno, Devil May Cry 5 has been in development for almost 4 years and his primary goal is to deliver an emotional story that will make you cry your heart out.
The latest instalment of the series is built using an RE Engine, which is also used to another upcoming Capcom game, Resident Evil 2 Remake. RE Engine is a tool originally designed to fit with action-heavy games. Itsuno stated the engine has been tuned and specialised for certain parts in the game’s development to deliver fast-paced action game. Among them is the visual, which players can run the game smoothly in 60 fps and achieve photorealism graphics.
Although Nero and Dante shared screens together in Devil May Cry 4, this game will focus more on Nero’s life after meeting Dante. Itsuno said Nero has evolved a lot since his first encounter with Dante. Then he pointed out that the design of his short hair was a result of his discussion with the character designer Tatsuya Yoshikawa in order to make him appear like a wiser adult.
Similar to Nero, Dante also experienced drastic changes to his character design especially that surprise beard, which aged him. With all things considered, Itsuno teased that the dishevelled beard serves a purpose in the storyline of Devil May Cry 5. I wonder what it could be…?
If you’re still wondering who’s the driver along with Nero, her name is Nicoletta Goldstein, the granddaughter of Nell Goldstein who invented Dante’s dual guns: Ebony & Ivory. Nico is also a crafter who is the mind behind Nero’s cybernetic arm after the mysterious disappearance of Devil Bringer on his right arm. While designing the new character, Itsuno wanted Nico to be a character that will become likeable for the players with her cheeky and fun demeanour.
As for Kyrie, Nero’s love interest in Devil May Cry 4, she holds a defining moment in Nero’s story arc in this game. Itsuno quipped, “I cannot tell you what happened to her. But I’m certain that there was a serious affair going on as Nero shouted her name (in the trailer).
Based on the key art above, a lot of fans have been speculating the identity of the third figure on Nero’s right side. What we know so far is the third character will be playable in the game. Different from Nero and Dante, the enigmatic character doesn’t wield any weapon and players will get to know why the character’s complete disinterest with weapons while progressing through the in-game story.
Nero appears to be missing his demonic powers from Devil Bringer after a mysterious individual severed his right arm. Later, it was substituted with a cybernetic arm called Devil Breaker, which was designed by Nico. However, the director said that Devil Bringer isn’t durable enough in combats. He revealed that there’s Nico’s mobile workshop in the van to replace the Devil Bringer.
Although Devil Breaker was not built to last long, Nico designed it that way because she preferred performance rather than stability. There are a lot of actions players can do with the Devil Breaker; from using Devil Breaker as a skate to grabbing an enemy from afar, to even shooting lasers. Swords and guns are still featured heavily in the game. Nero’s two-shot revolver, Blue Rose also has slight changes, which the two bullets have two different unique types for each bullet.
Devil May Cry 5 will unleash the Devil Trigger on PC, PS4 and Xbox One next year.
