D.Va in Heroes of the Storm. How will she fare in the Nexus?

By Kurtis Chan on May 23, 2017

After the being tested out in the PTR, Hana Song, also known as D.Va has arrived in the Heroes of the Storm live servers few days back. After playing as D.Va in Heroes of the Storm, her kit is somewhat different from Overwatch, unlike Tracer, Zarya, Genji and Lucio who got additional skills instead of changing them. Will her unique kit serve her well in the Nexus? Let's find out.

But before that, have a look at her traits, abilities and talents before going in depth with D.Va.

  •  Mech Mode
    • When D.Va’s Mech is destroyed, she is ejected after 0.75 seconds and can continue to fight in Pilot Mode. Destroying D.Va’s Mech only awards 50% of a normal Hero’s XP
  •  Pilot Mode
    • Each Basic Attack reduces the cooldown of Call Mech by 0.5 seconds. As a Pilot, D.Va only awards 50% of a normal Hero’s XP upon death

  • While in Mech Mode, D.Va can shoot while moving, but her Movement Speed is reduced by 15%.
  • D.Va can only use Mounts while in Pilot Mode.

Primary Abilities

  •  Self-Destruct (E)
    • Requires Mech Mode
    • Eject from the Mech, setting it to self-destruct after 4 seconds. Deals medium to massive damage in a large area, depending on distance from the center of the blast. Deals 50% damage against Structures

My thoughts on D.Va

D.Va is a very unique hero is Heroes of the Storm. She is the first hero to have 2 lives, where she will switch to pilot mode after her mech loses all its health. Currently, D.Va is the only hero in the game that is able to mitigate percentage damage with her damage mitigating abilities and talents (Defensive Matrix and Ablative Armour). However, Blizzard is looking to remove it in the upcoming patch. "Just wanted to pop in here and say that right now nothing should be able to mitigate % health damage which makes D.Va's Defense Matrix an unintended exception so we're going to change it in a future patch. As OP pointed out, this is inconsistent with how other Heroes work and while D.Va may disagree, she shouldn't be a special snowflake (in that regard)," said Alex Klontzas, Game Producer at Blizzard in his Reddit post.

D.Va is has a great wave clear with her auto-attacks as it has an area of effect where everything in the area will be dealt damage. In pilot mode, she will have great wave clear as well if you choose to have Big Shot as her ultimate. She also has high survivability where she has mech mode and pilot mode, if you manage to survive in pilot form and you have Call Mech ready, you will regain full health again. Furthermore, her Defense Matrix can also mitigate damage when it is dealt within the defensive field.

D.Va's ultimate ability in Overwatch is Self-Destruct, but in Heroes of the Storm, it is set as a normal ability. The Self-Destruct timer is set to 4 seconds, which is too long as people can always flee from the area of effect without taking any damage from it. The best way for Self-Destruct to work is to combo with heroes that has crowd control abilities like Jaina and Zarya who can lock enemies in an area and D.Va launching her mech for a massive explosion. Without the help of these heroes, her Self-Destruct can be used as a zoning skill to disengage a fight or forcing enemies to stay away from the objectives.

Big Shot has been my go-to ultimate ever since I have tried her out. This heroic ability can only be used when you are in pilot mode where D.Va deals damage to enemies in a straight line. It may seem weak in the D.Va hero spotlight video, at least I felt that way, but after trying it out in game, Big Shot definitely packs a punch! It has long range, unexpectedly high damage, as well as a mere 3 second cooldown. Moreover, her other heroic ability, Bunny Hop does not help out much even after trying it out in few different games. It does not deal sufficient damage and the duration of the slow is almost non-existent. Too bad there is no other way to get into pilot mode unless your mech loses all its health or using Self-Destruct.

Talent Upgrades (Pilot Mode Focused)

Here are the talents that I prefer to have in game, with focus on Pilot Mode:

Level 1: Pro Moves- Able to chase down enemies who are kiting backwards while attacking you

Level 4: Bring It On- Charges up Self-Destruct faster in order for me to use it and get into pilot mode

Level 7: Coming Through- Knock enemies back further when you or teammates are in danger, or knock enemies who are running away back to the team for an easy kill

Level 10: Big Shot- A must have ability if you love playing in pilot mode

Level 13: Expensive Plating- Increases durability of her mech, the longer Call Mech cooldown can be reduced when using Big Shot on enemy heroes

Level 16: Torpedo Dash- Grants D.Va the much needed mobility in pilot mode, able to dash in to deal damage, or dash out when things go south

Level 20: Pew! Pew! Pew!- Further increases the strength of Big Shot both in terms of damage and utility as it can effectively triple the cooldown reduction component of Big Shot
