Breaking News:Steam inaccessible in Malaysia?

By Dale Bashir on Sep 8, 2017

Users trying to log on to the Steam store found that the site is inaccessible and blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commisions. Users who try to log in using a Malaysian ISP whether it is through their desktops, laptops, mobile phones or tablets, will receive the following warning from the MCMC.

Clicking the link will provide info on what act is enacted upon with the blocking of the site, which is under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 under Section 233 which states:

As such, this section pertains mostly to the soliciting or transmission of content or media that is seen as "obscene" or offensive in the eyes of the law. This comes in light of the recent release of Fight of Gods, a fighting game depicting religious deities such as Jesus Christ and Buddha battling each other. As reported in Free Malaysia Today, Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak has made a statement regarding the game and taking action on the platform that provides Fight of Gods, in this case Steam.

Minister Salleh Said Keruak is not alone in his decision as the ban was backed up and lobbied by Council of Churches Malaysia General-Secretary Rev Dr Hermen Shastri, MCA Religious Harmony Bureau Chief Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker and several other major religious leaders, as reported here by The Sun Daily. Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) deputy president Datuk R.S. Mohan Shan has also stated that the game "degrades religion and religion leaders".

The MCMC only released their statement on the matter yesterday, and has blocked the site today. We don't know the future of Steam in Malaysia at the time of this writing, but will update it as the story progresses.
