Battle Royale Mode Is Not Going to Happen in Overwatch, Says Jeff Kaplan

It is no doubt that the “battle royale” genre is so undeniably hot these days with PUBG finally being released on mobile for both iOS and Android. By deploying 100 players in one arena and only one player comes out as the winner, PUBG has been keeping the battle royale genre popular throughout the year of 2017. During the same year, the battle royale popularity also spawned another game, Fortnite which also has a mobile version available on iOS.

In case you didn’t know, even famous rapper Drake had also hopped into the madness of battle royale while playing Fortnite with Twitch streamer, Ninja which become the all-time high record of Twitch streaming ever with 635,429 simultaneous viewers.

With that immense popularity, fans are pouring their hearts out on requesting a battle royale mode for Overwatch.

During an interview with Kotaku, the director of Overwatch Jeff Kaplan says he and the team at Blizzard had entertained the idea of adding a battle royale mode, but Overwatch is a distinctive game and putting in a battle royale mode could create a catastrophe.

He further explained the main core of the game, "First and foremost, Overwatch is a game about heroes, and part of what makes the core loop work in a battle royale game is the search, the looting, and the fairness that everybody's sort of equal.

A lot of times when I hear some of our fans pitch it, they're like 'Oh, just put a card in the Arcade one day that's a battle royale mode, but there's a lot of design and tech work to get us to that place and not just feel like a me-too game.’”

Kaplan insisted that the heroes of Overwatch wasn’t designed to be in a 1v1 game. Instead, all heroes work as a team harmoniously since not every hero is balanced against every other hero.

Another issue he brought up is the open space to fit a huge amount of heroes in maps. Believe it or not, Overwatch’s maps are actually very small when compared to PUBG and Fortnite’s landscapes.

It’s not like Kaplan hasn’t given thought towards adding a battle royale mode. As it turns out he and his team actually have spent a good amount of time on PUBG, but throwing a battle royale mode could change Overwatch entirely.

"Building those systems and getting that many players - I think battle royale for Overwatch starts to get into new game territory,” said the director.

A battle royale mode is certainly in demand in the video games industry these days especially since fellow publisher and developer Activision has said that they’re also keeping an eye on the battle royale genre popularity and fans are wondering if the mode will be added to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

But honestly, what do you guys think? Is battle royale mode feasible in Overwatch or would that just look like it’s ripping-off from other successful battle royale games? Let us know what you think on our Facebook!
