Overload, an upcoming "six-degree-of-freedom shooter" from the Descent creators, has released Version 2.0 of its playable teaser, less than two weeks ahead of its Steam Early Access release on March 13.
The game harks back to the 6-DOF shooters of the 90s, with a focus on carrying out the objective and utilizing the same "deformed-cube structure" that was used to created a "full-3D world" back in 1993. But with Overload, the developers have also added a 3D geometry decal system and deformation tool for greater visuals, and promise a "rich backstory and universe ripe for expansion" to go along with the gameplay. Despite its inspiration from the classics, it won't feature a pixelated look or 8-bit soundtrack, but something more up to date.
Overload Playable Teaser 2.0 offers "a complete refresh" of the original release, with graphics, sound, and gameplay all updated. The demo contains "a training level, a sample single-player 'destroy the reactor' level, and two Challenge Mode levels" that sets you against a horde of enemies.
At launch, it will feature a 15-mission single-player campaign with a story written by the writer of Freespace 2, with a multiplayer expansion due 6 to 8 months later. Other features include:
The devs have also promised to share their custom level editing tools with the community and announced full VR support, with a playable build for Oculus Rift.
The first version of its playable teaser was released last March, and has garnered a "very positive" user rating on Steam. So if you're a fan of Descent or the 6-D0F gere, Overload looks like it's worth checking out.
Overload will be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
